Patrol says Nebraska officer shot driver while being dragged by vehicle

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska State Patrol has begun an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that happened in Neligh on Sunday.

Around 12:35 p.m., Antelope County got a report of a road rage incident on Highway 275, the patrol said.

The two vehicles then stopped at a convenience store in Neligh, where an employee also called 911 to report a disturbance in the parking lot.

A Neligh police officer arrived at the convenience store and pulled over one of the vehicles involved in the road rage incident.

The suspect started to drive away, dragging the officer along, according to a preliminary investigation.

As the officer was being dragged, he pulled out his gun and shot the driver.  The officer was able to fall from the vehicle as the suspect continued heading west.

Afterward, a citizen drove after the vehicle and was able to force it off of the road, the patrol said.

Neligh Rescue transported the officer and female suspect to Antelope Memorial Hospital.  Both had injuries that were not life-threatening.

The suspect was then taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for further treatment.

The Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team is still investigating.
