Eagles have winning streak snapped

A six-game winning streak came to an end for the Stratton Eagles last week, as they had losses sandwiched around a lopsided win. The Eagles struggled to score in defeats by Burlington and Simla but had no such issues in their victory over La Veta.
It took more than a month for the contest with Burlington to actually be played, as the teams were originally slated to play in the opening week of the season but had to postpone until last Tuesday because of weather.
The Eagles could only generate five hits, including three doubles, but failed to break through in the 9-0 loss to the Cougars.
With little time to lick their wounds, the Eagles hit the road Thursday to face La Veta in Las Animas. Crooked numbers were the norm, as Stratton scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, followed by eight in the second, and five more in the fourth. They would go on to score a 16-5 win, with Cyler Notter recording two doubles, a triple, and four RBI in the victory.
The following afternoon, the Eagles would have to wait out Mother Nature before being able to take their home field in the final game of the regular season. Between wind, lightning, and rain, the game with Simla was delayed by half an hour.
Stratton would have trouble holding on to an early 1-0 lead, as the Cubs struck for four in the third and then exploded for a dozen in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Simla went on to claim the run rule victory, 17-5.
Stratton finished the regular season with a 9-9 mark. The Eagles earned the No. 4 seed for the District 4 Tournament, giving them a quarterfinal game at home on Tuesday against Eads. Stratton won the regular season matchup 8-4, with Cooper Seaman swatting three doubles and driving in three runs.
The winner of Tuesday’s game will meet either No. 1 Holly or No. 8 Manzanola at 10 a.m. Saturday in the semifinals in Las Animas. The Eagles are in position to claim a regional berth, regardless of district finish, based on their top eight spot in the RPI rankings.
