Ray Romano to play Jim Valvano in biopic

A biopic on Jim Valvano with Ray Romano starring as the former NC State basketball coach is in the works, WRAL has confirmed.

Deadline was first to report that Romano will also produce the movie along with game1’s Basil Iwanyk, Greg Economou and Mark Ciardi.

Valvano's daughter, Jamie, is also involved in the production. “We couldn’t be more excited to finally tell my father’s story in the form of a feature film, especially with Ray Romano and game1 as partners," Jamie Valvano told Deadline.

Jim Valvano coached at NC State from 1980 to 1990, which included an improbable 1983 national title run that is still one of the most unlikely championships in the history of college sports.

After his coaching career ended, Valvano was diagnosed with cancer in 1992. His inspirational public battle led to the formation of the V Foundation. According to its website, the V Foundation has awarded more $200 million in cancer research grants. Valvano died in 1993.

“Jim Valvano has always been an inspiration to me. I’m looking forward to working with the team at game1 as well as the Valvano Family to bring Jim’s incredible story and legacy to the screen," Romano told Deadline.
