David Hennessey served his country in Vietnam and is grateful for the support veterans receive in Logan County.

Hennessey, along with his wife Tecia, of Lincoln, will accept the keys to their new tiny home on Monday at the second home built by area contractors and volunteers.

Hennessey said with the fact that he and his wife are getting older they both can appreciate the smaller space.

"It is a blessing for the fact myself and wife are getting older with a lot of medical conditions, so with such a beautiful smaller home it will make life and everyday so much easier for both of us," wrote Hennessey in an email.

His wounds from the war are a daily internal struggle and the new home will allow him to lessen the pain.

"I have post traumatic stress disorder and the doctors have suggested a pet but where I live now will not allow pets. I am looking forward to getting a friend (pet)," Hennessey continued.

When he and his wife thought about the idea of moving he understood the simple progression of life.

"Yes, I am downsizing, but you know as we get older we realize we don't need all the material things," he said.

Joe Schaler with the Central Illinois Veteran Commission said the Hennessey family are deserving of the home.

"They are chosen based on need, income to support their home and ability and desire to maintain the home," said Schaler.

"Bringing another family to the neighborhood brings safety, security and more tax dollars for the City of Lincoln."

Hennessey said he appreciates everyone who has helped in the process of getting this second home in place.

"I will never be able to thank them enough for all that they have done, I just wish I was in better health to help on mine and the third home," he wrote. "People in Lincoln are so generous to help the Veterans.
