Why Scott Brown should not present the trophy to Celtic

It’s still not mathematically confirmed but Celtic fans are pretty safe in celebrating their 10th Premiership title in the last 11 seasons. And that includes planning a party for the next home game against Motherwell. The Hoops have a six point lead and a 20-goal advantage on goal difference with two games to go. But should the recently retired Scott Brown be the one presenting the trophy on that day?

Fans have been calling via social media for the club to invite their former captain to present the Premiership trophy to Callum McGregor next weekend.

While at first glance that seems like a great idea, on reflection it’s maybe not the right time or occasion.

The call for Broony’s return to Parkhead to help celebrate comes as the legendary midfielder called time on his playing career. His Instagram announcement attracted many tributes and memories from former teammates as well as others. The way his playing career ended wasn’t ideal to say the least. Celtic’s failed quest for 10IAR was followed by his move to Aberdeen, which came to an end abruptly in the middle of the season, meaning he never got the farewell he deserved.

Why Scott Brown should not present the trophy to Celtic

The underwhelming end to his career is a big reason why the idea of Broony presenting the trophy started to emerge amongst fans. But that may not be the right thing to do. Apart from anything else, it’s usually a representative of the SPFL and the league sponsor, who would be involved in handing over the trophy.

There is also an alternative view that Brown’s involvement could detract from the great success of this season’s squad and manager in securing a Scottish Premiership and League Cup double. It should be their moment of recognition.

It might be much more appropriate to invite Brown to raise the league champions flag at the start of next season if he is available then and not managing somewhere on that day. That act is usually given to recognise a former Celtic star’s achievement and seems entirely fitting for the man who raised one trophy after another during his time as captain of the club.
