The Cleveland Cavaliers may have an interest in Jerami Grant.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking for options this offseason through the trade market, as they’re pretty much tapped out in available cash. The talk has been mostly around re-signing Collin Sexton and re-acquiring Ricky Rubio, but some in the league believe the Cavs may be in on Jerami Grant, the Detroit Piston’s forward who is looking more and more like trade bait.

The Cavs really don’t need any more big men, but league sources are saying the Cavs may have an interest.

The rumor comes from Evan Dammarell, who believes the Cavaliers may pursue Grant. He’s told by several league sources that he may be on the Cavaliers’ radar. It should be stressed it’s not a Cavs’ source saying it, but people in the league are assuming the Cavs could be.  He wrote the following on the idea;

"On one hand, they could always package those picks, along with the contracts of someone like Lauri Markkanen or Caris LeVert, along with a future first, to get a player that could provide more of an immediate impact. Sources say that Detroit’s Jerami Grant could be a realistic trade target this summer. It just depends on whether or not the Cavaliers are willing to sweeten the pot compensation-wise. That’s where those two-second rounders could become key – they could be just enough to push a hypothetical trade for Grant over the finish line."

Going in on Jerami Grant would be a mistake for the Cleveland Cavaliers

Jerami Grant is a negative player according to RAPTOR on defense over the last three seasons and a negative on offense in two of the last three. Since to make the trade work, the Cavs would have to part ways with Lauri Markkanen, it’s a non-starter for me.

Markkanen and Grant are far from comparable pieces. Markkanen is as good as Granta is today, and is younger and a better scorer. To make this swap would be a foolish decision, especially considering Grant has only shot 43% from the floor since joining Detroit.

Grant, offensively, is one of the streakiest players in the league and while his contract may look like a “bargain”, the fact is he isn’t even living up to that. Ignore the points per game and look at his efficiency. He’s simply not worth the money or the assets.

There isn’t anything Grant does that Markkanen doesn’t do as well, if not better. It’s a bad idea to make at rade for Grant.
