The Pittsburgh Penguins locker-room is starting more and more to look like a MASH unit.

As the injuries continue to mount, they will dealt another big blow to their goaltending situation. Casey DeSmith, who replaced an injured Tristan Jarry is out for the rest of the season.

“Casey had successful core muscle surgery this morning,” head coach Mike Sullivan said on Friday. “He will be unavailable for the rest of the playoffs.

DeSmith was injured Tuesday during Pittsburgh’s 4-3 win in triple-overtime in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round series against the New York Rangers. He made 48 saves before pulling himself out of the second OT with a lower-body injury. Penguins’ third-string goalie Louis Domingue took over and made 17 saves for the win.

The results weren’t as good on Thursday night as the Rangers won 5-2 to even the series at 1-1, with Game 3 on Saturday in Pittsburgh.

DeSmith, 30, posted an 11-6-5 record with three shutouts, a 2.79 GAA and a .914 SV% during the 2021-22 regular season.

Jarry, 27, is still considered day-to-day with a foot injury that required a walking boot. He was 34-18-6 with four shutouts, a 2.42 GAA and a .919 SV% this season.

Coach Sullivan also provided the following updates:

  • F Rickard Rakell (upper-body) is day-to-day and a game-time decision
  • F Jason Zucker (lower-body) is day-to-day and a game-time decision
  • D Brian Dumoulin (undisclosed) is day-to-day with no timetable
