The Edmonton Oilers have recalled defenceman Philip Broberg from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors.

The rearguard has been up and down between the two clubs in recent weeks.

Broberg was returned to the Condors earlier this week ahead of their first-round matchup with the Abbotsford Canucks. The Condors swept their AHL Pacific Division foe in a best-of-three series, but won’t play games again until next Tuesday.

He appeared in both Condors games firing six shots on net.

For Broberg, it’s a great chance to get some practice in with the big club without having to travel too far. On top of that, he can be a bit of an insurance policy for the defencemen that the Oilers already have on the team.

We’ve talked about it at length here this year, but Broberg’s been developing quite nicely in North America this season. He appeared in 31 games with the Condors scoring four goals and 23 points and has played a significant role on the Condors’ defence. In Edmonton, he’s appeared in 23 games scoring one goal and three points.

At the NHL level, there was lots to like. His skating abilities are apparent and the fact he is able to play both sides is a blessing for this team. Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson did a good job in managing his minutes, too.

With Broberg on the ice at 5×5, the Oilers controlled 52.39 percent of the shot attempts, but just 37.04 percent of the goals scored and 46.94 percent of the expected goal share. There’s lots of room to grow, and the low GF% and xGF% numbers are largely due to a criminally low PDO of 94.3.
