Milbank's Schwenn, Hamlin's Leiseth, Watertown's Spartz and Tri-State relay win at Howard Wood

SIOUX FALLS — Milbank’s Bennett Schwenn and Tri-State’s boys medley relay team each added victories Saturday during the final day of the 97th Howard Wood Dakota Relays track and field meet.

On Friday, Hamlin’s Gracelyn Leiseth and Watertown’s Owen Spartz each won events with record-setting performances.

Leiseth not only broke the meet record, but also set an all-time state record in the girls’ shot put with winning throw of 48 feet, 11 inches. She eclipsed the previous state record of 48-10.75 set by Custer’s Kellyn Kortemeyer in 2021. The previous Howard Wood Relays record was 48-9.75 set by a Fort Collins (Colo.) athlete in 2003.

The field events in the meet were open to athletes of all divisions and Spartz also was victorious in the boys’ pole vault with a Watertown High School school-record vault of 15 feet, 3 inches. He eclipsed the old school record set by his older brother Noah (15-2) in 2017.

Schwenn won the boys’ triple jump (another open event) on Saturday with a leap of 45-5. It's the third time he's won the event at Howard Wood.

Tri-State won the Class B boys’ medley relay (3:47.03) with runners Dominick Anderson, Jakobe Anderson, Grayson Madsen and Kaleb Foltz.

Other Watertown Place Winners

Saturday — Collin Dingsor placed in both of the boys’ open hurdle events, taking fifth in the 300s (41.23) and seventh in the 110s (15.53).

Jaxson Fiechtner took eighth in the boys’ 400 dash (41.9) and Myah Morris added a fifth-place finish in the girls’ triple jump (35-7.25).

Spartz also teamed with Jesse Pietz, Cole Holden and Juven Hudson to finished eighth in the Class AA boys’ 400 relay (46.18).

Friday — Trinity Hodorff finished third in the girls’ pole vault (10-5), Holden third in the boys’ javelin (161-4).and Dalton Baumberger, Jaida Young, Eve Hauger and Fiechtner teamed for a fourth-place finish in the mixed 1,600 relay with a time of 3:48.23.

Other Area Place Winners

Saturday — Leiseth followed her record-setting performance on Friday with a fifth-place finish in the girls’ discus (127-11). Teammate Kami Wadsworth placed sixth (123-8).

Grace Drietz of Canby-Minneota placed sixth in the girls’ 1,600 run (5:15.69) and also anchored fifth-place Class A girls’ relay (4:20.78) that also featured RyAnn Hansen, Claire Stoks and Braelyn Merrit.

Castlewood’s girls placed fifth in the Class B 1,600 relay (4:27.24) and sixth in the Class B 400 relay (53.79). Kayla Goens, Presley Knecht and Mackenzie Everson ran on both relays. Cassidy Kirwan also ran the 400 and Chloe Ribstein the 1,600.

Castlewood’s boys took fourth in the Class B 1,600 relay (3:45.77) with Jaron Tharaldsen, Lane Tvedt, Kegan Tvedt and Jackson Schofield and sixth in the Class B 400 relay (46.18) with Logan Eng, Quincy Thu, K. Tvedt and Tharaldsen.

Milbank’s boys recorded runner-up finishes in both the Class A medley relay (3:38.6) and the Class A 1,600 relay (3:23.42). Sawyer Gauer, Kaden Krause, Schwenn and Nick Batchelor ran the medley and Krause, Batchelor, Garrett Mertens and Schwenn the 1,600.

Arlington notched an eighth-place finish in the Class B girls’ 1,600 relay (4:30.73) with runners Hadley Carlson, Halley Miller, Isabelle Steffensen and Addie Steffensen.

Clark-Willow Lake was fifth (3:436.91) and Deuel eighth (3:05.15) in th Class A boys’ medley relay. Trey Huber, Emmerson Larson, Brady Jordan and Tyler O’Neill ran for Clark-Willow Lake and Oliver Fieber, Trey Maaland, Tague Tvedt and Ricky Berndt for Deuel.

Friday — Schwenn recorded a fourth-place finish in the boys’ long jump (21-7.75). Other area place winners were Drew Reetz of Webster Area, tied for fourth in the boys’ pole vault (13-6); Wadsworth, sixth in the shot put (39-8.5); and Drietz, fifth in the girls’ 800-meter special with a time of 2:16.94.

Two area relays placed. Milbank Area took third in the Class A 3,200 (8:28.87) with runners Krause, Payton Brown, Bryan Meyer and James Batchelor and Castlewood finished fifth in the Class B boys’ 800 (1:35.32) with runners Eng, Jeremiah Wiersma, K. Tvedt and Tharaldsen.

Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invite

SIOUX FALLS — Area athletes won 12 events Friday in the Sioux Falls O’Gorman Invite, including Watertown’s Maddy Rohde.

Rohde won the Class AA girls’ javelin throw with a toss of 101 feet, 8 inches.

Other area individual event winners included Gracelyn Leiseth of Hamlin (open girls’ discus, 151-9), Adison Renkly of Sioux Valley (Class A girls’ 100-meter hurdles, 15.97 and 300 hurdles, 50.14), Luke Fraser of Hamlin (Class A boys’ 400 dash, 52.71) and Donovan Rose of Sioux Valley (Class A boys’ 110 hurdles, 17.19).

Sioux Valley’s boys won the Class A boys’ 400 (45.71) and 800 (1:34.99) relays with runners Rose, David Knutson, Connor Gross and Boden Schiller. The Cossacks also won the Class A boys’ medley (4:00.1) with runners Schiller, Knutson, Gross and Brock Christopherson and the Class A boys’ 1,600 relay (3:48.64) with runners Gross, Justin Blackledge, Christopheron and Skylar Schwab.

Arlington won the Class A girls’ 1,600 relay (4:27.79) with runners Harley Johnson, Halley Miller, Isabelle Steffensen and Addie Steffensen and Clark-Willow Lake the Class A girls’ medley relay (4:36.67) with runners Musonda Kabwe, Kelsi Hofer, Cadence Bochek and Kayla Jordan).

Sisseton Twilight-Legion Relays

SISSETON — Area athletes won 11 events Friday in the Sisseton Twilight-Legion Relays track and field meet.

The meet included 12 Class B and 11 Class A schools. Lisbon (N.D.) swept the team titles in the Class A divisions and Aberdeen Roncalli did the same in the Class B divisions.

Chase Kelly of Florence-Henry won the Class A boys’ shot put (44-1) and discus (131-11). Kalen Godel of Langford Area won the Class A 800-meter run (2:15.1), Sammy Femling of Milbank the Class A 300 hurdles (47.9) and Jayden Johnson of Milbank the Class A pole vault (12-0).

Area event winners in the girls division included Madison Zirbel of Dakota Hills (Class A 3,200, 12:36.9), Aysia Stefanich of Florence-Henry (Class A discus, 88-6), Caylin Kelly of Florence-Henry (Class A shot put, 32-7.5) and Erin Case of Webster Area (Class A pole vault, 8-0).

Florence-Henry won the Class A 3,200 relay (10:56.6) with runners Taylor Watson, Griffyn Muller, Brooke Hlavacek and Trinity Watson and Tri-State won the Class B medley relay (5:02.9) with runners Ayden Ochs, Iceli Rabbithead, Sienna Klein and Macy Fritz.
