The night began with Oprah clearing up a big misconception about resilience. “People think it means enduring hardship and bouncing back unscathed; it is not,” she says. Hear what Oprah believes resilience really means in the clip above, and read on for more Insider details.

Find lessons in hard moments

Oprah was joined by 12 of our very own Insider community members in this class, who unabashedly opened up, showing the kind of vulnerability that we learned to embrace in March’s class with Frank Bruni, which is necessary for true connection and growth. When Oprah asked Insider Garlan to share her reaction to the poll question “I am looking for ways to overcome a hardship,” Garlan spoke about her angst around finding the right kind of support for her autistic son. Oprah advised her to not “miss what this moment is trying to show you and trying to teach you.” Watch this clip to hear the rest of her supportive advice:

Create a road map to resiliency

Featured guest Jamie Kern Lima came prepped and ready to give life classers a road map to resiliency, pulled from the pages of her bestselling book. But before she dug in, Oprah and Jamie recounted a powerful full-circle moment that was a great lead-in to the night’s lesson:

Flip the script on rejection

Reaching into her resiliency toolbox, Jamie talked about the importance of people getting unstuck from the pain of rejection, which leaves many not wanting to move forward with their dreams. “People are wired to avoid pain,” Jamie said. But what will hurt more, the pain of rejection or that of a dream denied because a person is too afraid to move forward? Jamie advised everyone to “flip the script” and change their relationship with rejection:

Stop hiding in plain sight

The night finished with Jamie asking life classers how they would make the decision to stop hiding in plain sight. Insider Mapela, who immigrated to the U.S. from South Africa, spoke about the difficulty she had with stepping into her light. Mapela remarked on her self-doubt, saying she feels she doesn’t belong, and that has prevented her from accomplishing some of her goals: “I do have big dreams, but I feel like I am always stepping back a little bit.” In this response to Mapela, Oprah closed the evening with this comment on not just resiliency, but a bit of wisdom for life:
