Each and every year, the United States sees the most tornadoes of any country on Earth.
And each year, damage from these storms is estimated in the millions, if not billions, of dollars.
Sadly, loss of life occurs each and every year from these violent forces of nature.
So far this year, only one tornado has touched down in the ABC 13 viewing area.
It was this storm, back in March, in Carroll County.
Officially rated an EF-2 on the scale.
"The house was shaking and it sounded like every tree was getting ready to come through the house," one area resident said.
In fact, March was an unusually busy month of Tornadoes.
Over 200 tornadoes touched down in the U.S. in the month of March.
Fortunately, the one that touched down in our area, had a very important number: zero fatalities.
That is credited to quick thinking by the residents who lived here, who had a plan and took action.
Statistically, April and May are our most active months for Tornadoes.
Lynchburg and Elon know that all too well.
But tornadoes can happen any time of year, just ask Evergreen.
A monster EF-3 Tornado ripped a path of destruction through this quiet community in February 2016.
And we are in a La Niña pattern, which usually means:
"A pattern that is rather active for severe weather," said Phil Hysell with the National Weather Service.
