Wildfires ravaging Florida Everglades bringing smoke, ash to nearby counties
The Florida Forest Service is showing multiple active and contained wildfires in the Everglades Thursday.
The wildfires total more than 6,300 acres Thursday.
Active Wildfires
In South Florida, there are two wildfires that haven't been contained.
The smoke from them is carrying over onto the Turnpike and other cities, such as Boca Raton and Delray Beach, according to Boca Raton police.
Both wildfires are right on the county line between Palm Beach and Broward counties. They are between U.S. Highway 27 and Boca Raton near the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
The 2Aplha wildfire is 1,056 acres and L39 fire is 5,300 acres, according to the dashboard.
The reason for the fires are unknown, but this is the peak fire season and there were intense thunderstorms with lighting in the area Wednesday.
No structures have been damaged or are threatened at this time.
Contained Wildfires
There are two contained wildfires in Okeechobee County.
Parker Island Rd
This wildfire is 26.5 acres and is near Lonesome Island Road and Canal C-41.
Pine Creek
This wildfire is 2 acres and is near Northeast 48th Avenue and Northeast 224th Street in Hilolo.
Air Quality
The air quality near the fires is lower as smoke moves throughout and spreads to nearby cities.
