Chris Cooper goes 'Nuts,' Cohasset's Kate Bosworth hits Netflix, Hollywood back in Hingham

Cohasset High grad Kate Bosworth (Class of 2001) plays the stepmother of a shy teenager trying to break out of her shell in the teen romance "Along for the  Ride."

The movie is based on Sarah Dessen’s novel of the same name and will stream on Netflix on May 6. 

Set in the seaside town of Colby, the story follows Auden (Emma Pasarow) during  her last summer before college. What was supposed to be a quiet few weeks hanging out with her dad (Dermot Mulroney) and his new wife (Bosworth) turns into the adventure of a lifetime for Auden. For better or worse, a mysterious boy (Belmont Cameil) shows Auden all the things she missed out on while she was in high school. Andie MacDowell also co-stars. 

Bosworth moved to Cohasset when she was 14. While at Cohasset High, she played soccer and lacrosse and was a member of the National Honor Society. In 2013, she donated a 50-foot red carpet to the school for its annual pre-prom gala on Cohasset Common.

Bosworth's film credits include "Still Alice," "Blue Crush," "Superman Returns," “The Horse Whisperer,” “Remember the Titans” and ”Straw Dogs.” Up next for the busy actress is the noir thriller "The Enforcer," opposite Antonio Banderas, and the kidnap drama "The Locksmith," which co-stars Ryan Phillipe and is due out in September. 

Coopers coming to Plimoth Cinema

Kingston resident and Academy Award winner Chris Cooper and his wife, Marianne Leone Cooper,  will hold a special screening of their 11-minute short film "Nuts" at the Plimoth Cinema on May 14.

The movie is one of 13 vignettes in "With/In," a star-studded, made-at-home COVID anthology revolving around themes of confinement and isolation. It tells the story of a   divorced couple isolating together for the sake of their dog. Chris makes his directorial debut in "Nuts," working from a script written by Marianne,  and both performed. The movie was shot over two days at their Kingston home. 

The Coopers have been longtime supporters of the Plimoth Cinema, which is the only arthouse between Hingham and Dennis. Located inside the visitor's center at Plimoth  Patuxet Museums, the cinema caters to movie buffs preferring smaller venues showcasing independent and foreign films. There are two auditoriums; one seats 100 and the other 200.

Cooper won an Academy Award in 2003 as best supporting actor for his work in "Adaptation." He was nominated for a Tony Award in 2017 for “A Doll’s House, Part 2.” Other film work includes "Seabiscuit," "Capote," "American Beauty," “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” "Little Women" and “The Bourne Identity.” He recently finished filming "Boston Strangler," which filmed in Boston and the South Shore.  

Leone, known for her role in “The Sopranos,” is an acclaimed writer. She celebrated her late son in her 2010 book “Jesse: A Mother’s Story” after he died unexpectedly in 2005 at age 17. She published her memoir “Ma Speaks Up: And a First-Generation Daughter Talks Back” in 2017.  

Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Emily Mortimer, Rosie Perez, Debra Winger and Gina Gershon also contributed to the "With/In" project.

The "Nuts" screening is at 7:30 p.m. May 14 in the Linn Theater at Plimoth Cinema, 137 Warren Ave. A question-and-answer session with Chris and Marianne will follow. Tickets cost $25 at plimoth.org/events.

All proceeds from the event support the Plimoth Cinema. 

Hollywood in Hingham

A television crew took over a portion of Hingham Square this week to shoot scenes for the second – and final – season of the AMC dark comedy “Kevin Can F*** Himself.”  Filming was scheduled to happen Wednesday and Thursday at the Snug, a popular Irish pub at 116 North St., according the bar's Facebook page.

Written and created by Valerie Armstrong (“Lodge 49”), the genre-bending “Kevin Can F*** Himself” follows the story of Allison Roberts (“Schitt’s Creek” star Annie Murphy), the prototypical put-upon “sitcom wife.” At wit’s end, she revolts against her life and her lovable chubby man-child husband (Eric Petersen) who mostly plays video games and drinks brews with his bros. The show is set in Worcester.

Along with Murphy, the series also stars Mary Hollis Inboden, Alex Bonifer, Brian Howe and Raymond Lee.

Season 1 of “Kevin” was also shot on the South Shore. Cameras rolled in last  February at the Common Market Restaurants in Quincy. Murphy was spotted on location in Brockton, Milton, Hingham and Worcester.

New episodes will air later this year. A date has not been announced. The first season of “Kevin,” which premiered June 20 and concluded Aug. 1, was the most-watched series on AMC+, the network reported.  

Marshfield's Carell at CinemaCon

Steve Carell, one of Marshfield's most popular summertime residents, promoted his new movie "Minions: The Rise of Gru" at the recent CinemaCon, the annual Las Vegas convention and trade show for theater owners. 

The movie hits theaters July 1 and tells the story of Gru (Carell) before he became an evil mastermind. Voice actors include Alan Arkin, Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Lucy Lawless.

Carell can be seen in Season 2 of "Space Force" on Netflix and "The Morning Show" on Apple TV.  Upcoming, "The Office" alum plays a psychotherapist held prisoner by a serial killer (Domhnall Gleeson) in “The Patient,” a limited series on FX. 

He is married to Cohasset native Nancy Walls. They have two children. He is originally from Acton, but usually spends summers in Marshfield. He owns Marshfield Hills General Store. Carell became a darling in town when he gave the “MarshVegas” shout-out from the Oscar Red Carpet in 2007.

Sarah Lancashire stars as Child and filming of the eight-episode first season took place in and around Boston, including Quincy.
