PCS runners up at SPVA golf

Although storms blew across the western half of Nebraska Friday, the SPVA golf tournament went off without a hitch.
Perkins County Head Coach Rich Borman said the weather at Kimball was fine, especially given the type of weather his team has seen all season.
The Plainsmen finished third as a team. North Platte St. Pat’s won the team championship by 21 strokes, 346-367, over Bridgeport. PCS totaled 384. Kimball, Sutherland, Chase County and Hershey rounded out team results.
Kimball’s Tyler Lusche and NPSP’s Teegan Sonnemann tied for first with scores of 78. The Irish also snuck in the third place finisher, Connor Hasenauer, 79, ahead of the Plainsmens’ top finisher, Zaybreon Hanson, 84.
Hunter Garner, 97, placed 11th and Nolan Foster, 99, also finished in the top 15, coming in tied for 12th.
PCS fielded full varsity and JV teams at the meet.
Borman said coaches are still putting the pieces of the puzzle together for the varsity team.
“Several of our newer payers are making big improvements and pushing for a spot on varsity. These next few weeks will establish who will be our best five as we approach district and state events,” Borman said.
The Plainsmen were at McCook Tuesday for the Hitchcock County Invite and will stay busy with the Kimball Invite Thursday.
The team’s regular season will wrap up May 12 in Ogallala.
PCS will return to Kimball for a third time May 16-17 for districts.
The state tournament will be May 24-25 at North Platte’s Lake Maloney Golf Club.
With his team continuing to show improvement, Borman said his team’s motto is “practice hard, play easy.”
“I believe we can still practice harder to make our playing easier,” Borman added.
The Plainsmen are still looking to have four players have their best rounds simultaneously, Borman said, which is necessary for the team to achieve its goals.
“I know these boys want to score low and play their best. Hopefully, Coach Smith and I can give them what they need to succeed,” Borman said.
