Stratton school board accepts resignations, hires new principal

The board of education of Stratton School District R-4 met in regular session in the high school library on March 28 at 6 p.m. with all board members present.

Also in attendance were Shelby Thompson, athletic director, Kolby Brubacher, principal, Kandy Davis, superintendent, and Kathy Lewis as recorder.

 

Athletic director

Thompson reported that high school track has 29 students out; high school girls’ golf has 6; high school baseball has 20 and middle school track has 27 students participating.

She also reported that she has been working with Kerrie Robinson to implement a plan for our Vertimax so that coaches can use it before Iron Eagle in the summer and then at the beginning of each season next year.

Thompson stated that Central Plains Equipment has reached out to see if Stratton would be interested in them giving the athletic department a donation for every touchdown our football team scores.

All Stratton needs to do is have the announcer call our end zone, the Central Plains Red Zone.

 

Principal

Brubacher reported that the PTO committee was meeting on March 28 to plan dinner for May 10 and 11 when the Earth and Space Observatory will visit Stratton.

He also reported that he conducted monthly fire drills; conducted mid-year review meetings with certified staff; attended BOCES professional development with area principals; coordinated Impact Team meeting agendas for March and April; met with several families concerning 504s, IEP’s and ISST meetings; attended weekly admin team meetings and conducted observations and gave feedback to teachers.

He also reported that he conducted Read Across America Week at the elementary school; attended CMAS training and CMAS prep meetings; finished book study with admin team; conducted Sources of Strength training with students and staff and met with staff along with Davis and Leah Price from BOCES to go over 504s and IEP requirements.

He stated that he finished formal evaluations of certified staff; attended parent teacher conferences; covered recess duty to allow teacher prep time before conferences; attended district/regional basketball at Brush and attended Principal meeting in Limon at BOCES.

He also stated that he attended Screenagers presentation in Eads with Penny and Jen May so see if it was a fit for Stratton Schools; attended enrichment day and observed students working on calisthenics and several other activities; attended job fair at UNC Greeley with Davis and helped interview potential kindergarten candidate.

 

Board action

The board approved the consent agenda which consisted of the minutes from the regular board meeting on Feb. 28.

They also approved the following:

payroll/board bills;

financial reports; approved revised policies AC, DJB, GBI and JICDE;

March 10 and March 22 as snow days;

Mentor Program Grant Assurance;

Also approved were the following resignations:

Analise Garland as high school English teacher;

Kolby Brubacher as K-12 Principal;

Shelby Thompson as assistant high school track coach for 2021-22

Timber Herman as the preschool para.

In later action, the board approved the 2022-23 Salary Schedule A; approved probationary, non-proba-tionary staff for 2022-23; approved purchase of micro-bus from National Bus Sales; approved purchase of PowerSchool On-line Enrollment Service; approved sealed bid from Rhonda Shutte for the commercial refrigerator and approved Apta Fund by Harris School Solutions.

 

Superintendent

Kandy Davis presented the following items for discussion: 2022-23 Salary Schedule A or B and Apta Fund by Harris School Solutions.

Davis reported that she met twice with our ISST team to provide input and support for our students and their families; attended district and regional basketball in Bush; met with the Office of Early Childhood regional director to review upcoming requirements for preschool assessments and Colorado Preschool Program application; participated in a book study with our district leadership team; attended a teacher job fair at UNC in Greeley; participated in interviewing a teacher candidate; was present during parent teacher conferences; sent out several communication messages in response to weather conditions; met every Monday with the admin team to communicate about district wide events and activities and met with parents who expressed athletic concerns.

She also reported that she met with Penny Isenbart to discuss resources for teachers to implement with reading instruction and observed and participated in some enrichment day activities that involved painting, designing with a 3-D printer and robotics.

She stated that she spoke with Harris Solutions for information on the Apta Fund accounting software; attended the SAC meeting where CDE provided updates about school finance; completed the Mentor Program Grant for submission on March 28; completed a review of CTE follow-ups and submitted the district data through Colorado CTE Gateway and met with Kathy to develop two salary schedule proposals for the board’s consideration.

With no further business to discuss, Nichole Tanner adjourned the meeting at 6:43 pm. The next regular meeting will be on April 25 at 6 p.m.

 

Special meeting

The board of education of Stratton School District R-4 met in special session in the high school library on April 13, at 6 p.m. with all board members present. (Note: Brad Cure attended via telephone.) Also in attendance were Shelby Thompson, Kolby Brubacher, Kandy Davis, B. J. Shean and Antonio Perez via Zoom.

After a discussion of the process and timeline for offering principal position to applicants, the board approved Antonio Perez as the K-12 Principal for 2022-23.

With no further business to discuss, Nichole Tanner adjourned the meeting at 6:19 p.m.
