Lady Eagle golfers compete at Akron

With dangerously high winds in the forecast, the Stratton lady golfers hit the links at Akron last Friday morning, squaring off against familiar foes, and Mother Nature, for the Washington County Invitational.
To mitigate those high winds, the event began 90 minutes ahead of plan. The Lady Eagles still struggled with the conditions and finished seventh as a team. Stratton combined to shoot a 347 as a team, trailing sixth place Wray by 26 strokes. Washington County (Akron and Otis combined) won the team title with a score of 285. Brush and Burlington tied for second at 293.
MaKayla Shean had her best finish of the season, placing in a tie for 20th while shooting a season-low 110.
The first-place finisher shot a 91 to win by a single stroke.
Clare Miltenberger was next for the Lady Eagles, posting a 117 that got her 26th place. She was only four shots away from matching her best performance of the season. Hot on her heels was Jessica Brandon, who nearly matched her best round of the season with a 120, good enough for 28th. Her top round was three weeks ago at Wray, where she shot a 119.
Piper Witzel rounded out the varsity finishers for Stratton, shooting a 127 to claim 30th place. It was just her second varsity tournament of the year, and she improved by 40 strokes over her first.

In the JV tournament, Kallie McMillan took seventh, recording a nine-hole round of 59. The top finisher in the event ended with a 56. Claire Cure carded a 68, earning her 21st place.
The Lady Eagles will head to Eads on Friday for the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Kit Carson. The League tournament, hosted by Brush, will be held in Sterling on Monday.
