Who is Sir Ridley Scott? Director behind new Napoleon movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby

The rundown on the 84-year-old director known for the Gladiator, Thelma and Louise and Alien

It's been 22 years since Joaquin Phoenix worked with director Sir Ridley Scott in the action-packed movie Gladiator. The award-winning director is known for his movies which are extravagant, theatrical and filled with carnage.

From chest-bursting aliens and dreamy-eyed robots, the director has delivered some of the best movie titles of all time. However, at 84-years-old Sir Ridley Scott shows no sign of folding away the director's chair.

In recent months, the movie-maker has been shooting his new upcoming film, Napoleon, which is a biopic on the ruthless French military leader. Once again he will be pairing up with Oscar-winning Joaquin Phoenix for the Apple TV+ film.

How did his career start?

Born in Tyne and Wear in 1937, his father was an officer in the Royal Engineers and the family followed him. Sir Ridley initially wanted to join the Royal Army, but his father encouraged him to pursue his interest in film.

He kicked off his career at West Hartlepool College of Art and then London's Royal College of Art. Sir Ridley joined the BBC as a trainee set designer in 1962 working on several high profile series.

It's at the BBC where he underwent a trainee director's course. His first directing job was an episode of BBC's Z Cars - Z Cars: Error of Judgement. Scott then went on to form an advertising production company called Ridley Scott Associates with his brother, Tony Scott.
