Rams go 0-2 vs. Merino, Limon

By Andy Bowin

The Akron Rams baseball team picked up an extra game last week, adding a Tuesday afternoon matchup with Merino to the schedule.  The 1A, second ranked Merino Rams proved to be too much for the Akron Rams, taking an early 5-1 lead after the 1st inning, and cruising to an 11-1 victory.

Sophomore Ryan McCaffrey got the start on the mound for the Akron Rams.  McCaffrey took the loss for the Rams, giving up 5 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning, allowing 1 hit, 2 walks, and 2 hit batters, while striking out 1.  Hunter Molt relieved McCaffrey.  Molt allowed 4 earned runs in 1-2/3 innings on 5 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 1.  Molt was relieved by Caleb Poss, who allowed no earned runs in 1 inning on 1 hit and 1 hit batter.  Poss was relieved by Alex Bowin, who threw 1-1/3 innings, allowing no runs on 1 hit, 1 walk, and 1 hit batter.  Dakota Farnam finished the day on the hill for Akron, getting the only hitter he faced to ground out to shortstop.

The Akron Rams were stymied at the plate by the Merino pitching staff, totaling just 5 baserunners on 2 walks, 2 hits, and a fielder’s choice.  Jackson Filla accounted for both Rams’ hits, while Evan Vogt scored the lone Akron Ram run.

Anderson Filla started on the mound against Limon.

On Thursday, the Rams traveled to Limon to take on the defending 2A champion and current #1 ranked Badgers in a varsity contest.  The Badgers took the lead early and never looked back, handing the Rams their 8th loss of the year, 11-1.

Brock Swedlund saw some time at the pitcher position last week.

Starting on the mound for Akron was Anderson Filla.  Filla threw 2 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 3 hit batters, striking out 3.  Tucker Stahn took over for Filla, throwing 1 inning, allowing 3 earned runs on 2 hits and 4 walks, striking out 2. Poss finished the game for the Rams, throwing 1 inning, giving up no runs and no hits, walking 1, and striking out 1.

At the plate, the Rams collected 4 hits.  A. Filla led the way, picking up 2 hits.  Recording the other 2 hits for the Rams were J. Filla and Bowin.  J. Filla also scored the lone Ram run of the game.

The Ram baseball schedule starts to wind down over the next 2 weeks.  On Tuesday, the Rams host a doubleheader with the Byers Bulldogs, and on Saturday will travel to Burlington to take on the Burlington Cougars.
