Newcastle United have had a problem up top this season. Callum Wilson has been out since December after picking up an injury but somehow he is still the club’s top scorer of the campaign till now. And even he was not very prolific before his stint on the sidelines, and scored only 6 goals. A large part of that is due to the struggles that Chris Wood has faced though.

Wood was signed from Burnley in the January window for a transfer fee around £25 million and a lot of eyebrows were raised then as well about whether it was the right move from the Magpies.

Wood has not been able to prove his critics wrong till now as he has struggled in front of goal, even though he has done a decent job leading the line for Eddie Howe’s side.

Noel Whelan believes that Newcastle United could go after another striker in the summer, which would only add competition for Wood to keep his place in the team. As reported by Football Insider, the pundit said:

"“They’ll go into the market and spend big money. That will result in more competition for Wood to try and keep his place. You can never have too many strikers.“Wood leads the line well and occupies defences – but as a forward, and they’ll all tell you – you won’t have a good game unless you’re on that scoresheet.”"

It is safe to say that it has not quite worked out for Wood at Newcastle United till now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 2 goals in 15 appearances for The Magpies.

Thus, it would not come as a huge surprise if the club did end up going after another striker in the upcoming summer transfer window. In fact, they have already been linked with several interesting names like Victor Osimhen, Darwin Nunez, Hugo Ektike and others.

The fact of the matter is that Newcastle United do need a striker who can score on a consistent basis and at the moment, Wood just does not look like that player. But at the same time, a player of his profile could definitely have a place in the squad moving forward.
