Voter participation in the 2022 primaries appears pretty low, in Allen County and others around northeast Indiana. Allen County saw just 13 percent of its registered voters turn out for the primary election. Other counties, such as Huntington County, got only as high as 20 percent participation.
The midterm elections will take place Tuesday, Nov. 8.
3rd District:
Huntington County resident Gary L. Snyder will be the Democratic option on the ballot for 3rd District voters in the November midterm elections.
Snyder took a 52 percent share of the vote between himself and challengers A.J. Calkins and Phillip Beachy.
He seeks to unseat Republican Rep. Jim Banks, who has served Indiana's 3rd District in the US House since 2016.
Banks ran unopposed in Tuesday's primary.
Statehouse:
Emergency room physician Dr. Tyler Johnson took 54 percent of the vote in a three-way race against East Allen County Schools board member Ron Turpin and Denny Worman to represent the Republican side of Senate District 14 in November. That district encompasses the eastern part of Allen County and up into northern DeKalb County.
In the Republican race for District 50, which includes parts of Huntington and Wabash counties, long-time Rep. Dan Leonard lost to a further-right challenger in Wabash City Councilwoman Lorissa Sweet.
County Sheriff:
Allen County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Troy Hershberger secured the Republican nomination for Allen County sheriff, according to unofficial primary election results.
Hershberger beat Fort Wayne Police Deputy Chief Mitch McKinney with 54 percent, or 13,303 votes, on Tuesday. There were 24,445 votes cast in the Republican sheriff primary.
In November, he’ll face Democratic nominee Fort Wayne Police Captain Kevin Hunter who ran unopposed in the primary.
In Whitley County, Chief Deputy Jason Spencer won the primary with 62 percent of the vote. He defeated Thor Hodges and George Peppas for the right to run in the November general election.
DeKalb County Sheriff Deputy Brady Thomas won the Republican primary, defeating fellow Sheriff's Department Deputy David Cserep with 62 percent of the vote.
Wells County Sheriff Scott Holliday defeated Deputy Ryan Mounsey with just under 60 percent of the vote.
