SELINSGROVE – A regional shortline has taken over rail service to Kreamer in Snyder County from Norfolk Southern.
North Shore Railroad Co. and Affiliates based in Northumberland ran its first train Wednesday over what it calls its Selinsgrove branch.
The SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority in April purchased the 9 miles of track that also serves Selinsgrove and Shamokin Dam for $371,200. North Shore is the private rail operator for the authority.
Norfolk Southern had been providing service on the line since 1999 when it took it over from Conrail. At one time it extended west to Lewistown.
There are three current customers on the Selinsgrove branch including Kreamer Feed but additional ones will be solicited, said Joe Kantz, business and development manager for North Shore, said.
With the acquisition of those 9 miles of track, the authority owns approximately 215 miles in central Pennsylvania over which the parent North Shore operates five shortlines including one called North Shore.
In addition to the new Selinsgrove branch, the North Shore line also serves customers between Northumberland and Beach Haven through Danville, Bloomsburg and Berwick.
The company’s other shortlines are:
- Juniata Valley in the Lewistown area.
- Lycoming Valley between Avis and Muncy through Williamsport.
- Nittany & Bald Eagle between Lock Haven and Tyrone with branches to Bellefonte and State College.
- Shamokin Valley between Sunbury and Shamokin.
It also has the Union County Industrial Railroad that does not operate on authority tracks.
