Cleveland Guardians latest team to take chance on Anthony Alford

The days of Anthony Alford being considered a possible star at the major league level are over. A one time top 100 prospect due to his blend of power and speed, Alford never saw those tools translate at the major league level as injuries derailed what had been a promising career. And yet, he continues to intrigue as he gets chances with different organizations.

The Cleveland Guardians are the latest team to give Alford a chance. He has signed a minor league contract and has been sent to Triple-A to start his time in their system.

It is fair to wonder what Alford’s ceiling is now. He has been a solid piece in Triple-A, posting a .262/.349/.427 batting line in his 986 plate appearances, hitting 28 homers and 51 doubles while stealing 49 bases. That production is enough for Alford to get a look at the majors.

The problem is that Alford has not been able to replicate that production. He also has not had much of a chance, with 102 games spread out over six seasons due to injury. His 49 games played in 2021 were by far his most extensive time in the majors. He showed the potential to be a useful part of an outfield in that time, hitting five homers and six doubles while stealing five bases in his 148 plate appearances.

It is possible that he could find an opportunity in Cleveland. Oscar Mercado is not exactly lighting up the stat sheet. Bench pieces such as Ernie Clement have not necessarily done much to keep their roster spot. If Alford is healthy and productive in Triple-A, he could force his way onto the roster.

The Cleveland Guardians are the latest team to take a chance on Anthony Alford. His potential and pedigree have gotten him another look.
