Who should be the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week?

Corpus Christi area track athletes claimed berths in the UIL State Track & Field championships last week and several are finalists for the Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week.

The Caller-Times is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

McMullen County's Isaiah Billingsley won three events at the Region IV-A Track Meet, claiming titles in the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter runs.

Robstown's Jazmine Miller won the 200 meter dash at the Region IV-4A Track Meet in Kingsville. Calallen's Amber Gonzalez claimed the 300-meter hurdles at the same meet. Both will compete next week at the UIL State Meet.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at ctsports@caller.com, by messaging the Caller-Times through its Facebook page, or on Twitter @CallerSports.

THIS WEEK'S NOMINEES

• Maddie Aguilar, Veterans Memorial softball — Aguilar earned two playoff wins for the Eagles, including a shutout with seven strikeouts and no walks in Game 1. Aguilar added five strikeouts and two RBI in Game 2, propelling the Eagles to their first playoff series win.

• Isaiah Billingsley, McMullen County boys track & field — Billingsley advanced to the UIL State Meet in three events — winning the 400-, 800-, and 1,600-meter run at the Region IV-A track meet.

• Amber Gonzalez, Calallen girls track & field — Gonzalez won the Region IV-4A girls 300 hurdles to advance to the UIL State Meet with a personal-best time of 45.55 seconds.

• Madelyn Kocik, Gregory-Portland girls track & field — Kocik finished third in the girls long jump at the Region IV-5A track meet (17-10.5) and finished fifth in the triple jump after winning both at the District 29-5A meet for the second straight year.

• Clarence McGill, Moody boys track & field — McGill won the 300 hurdles and finished second in the 110 hurdles at the Region IV-5A track meet to advance to state in both events, also helping the Trojans 400 relay finish third.

• Jazmine Miller, Robstown girls track & field — Miller won the 200-meter dash at the Region IV-4A meet with a personal-best time of 25.14 seconds to qualify for the UIL State meet.

• Clarissa Valdez, Tuloso-Midway softball — Valdez helped T-M earn an 11-4 win against Raymondville in the Class 4A bi-district playoffs. The sophomore was 5 for 5 with a double and three RBI and pitched three scoreless innings allowing three hits with two strikeouts.

• Jared Wallace, Riviera boys track & field — Wallace qualified for the UIL State Track meet with a time of 15.52 seconds in the Region IV-2A boys 110 hurdles, also finishing fifth in the 300 hurdles and seventh in the long jump.
