An Alabama Department of Health worker was investigating an attack by a pack of dogs last week when she was killed by those same dogs. And the dogs’ owner is now in custody.

Jacqueline Summer Beard, 58, was discovered dead in her car when police responded to a complaint about a suspicious vehicle. The car was found near the Alabama state border with Mississippi outside Red Bay, according to a Facebook post by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Beard was sent to the area to follow up on a reported canine attack of a woman who was walking in the area. That woman is still hospitalized in Mississippi, according to AL.com.

When officers arrived at the home of 39-year-old Brandy Dowdy, the dogs’ owner who Beard is believed to have been trying to contact when she was killed, the dogs attacked again. Some of the dogs had to be immediately euthanized, the FCSO said.

Dowdy was arrested and charged with manslaughter. She is being held without bail.
