Columnist Justice B. Hill wants Cleveland Metropolitan School District CEO Eric Gordon replaced (”Eric Gordon’s been in charge since 2011 — that’s long enough,” April 22). I’m a CMSD graduate and former teacher. Before Mr. Gordon, I watched 12 CEO/superintendents in 20 years stream through CMSD. Having spent time training teachers in Cleveland, I’ve seen some of those leaders hide behind doors and accept the position for personal gain.
Mr. Gordon brings stability and a positive, caring attitude. Principals and teachers respect him. He is tenacious and wants success for all CMSD children, regardless of race.
He developed the pre-kindergarten, school choice and Say Yes College initiatives, and he continues to work to improve our students’ reading and writing skills. Without strong literacy skills, it is difficult to succeed in life. The 2019 NAEP, a national test, found just one-third of our nation’s children have adequate literacy skills, with little change since 1992. This is a national crisis and disgrace!
Having had personal discussions with Eric Gordon over nine years, I know his job to reach all Cleveland children is momentous. I support him for all that he has done, and continues to do to help all Cleveland children succeed.
