N.J. Gov. Phil Murphy to discuss Supreme Court abortion ruling. How to watch live today.

UPDATE: Murphy blasts ‘right-wing’ Supreme Court over ‘enraging’ news it may overturn Roe v. Wade

Gov. Phil Murphy plans to comment on the U.S. Supreme Court’s expected decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which provides women across the country a constitutionally protected right to have an abortion during an unrelated event Tuesday morning.

Murphy is deliver remarks on the draft ruling, first reported by Politico on Monday, at 11:15 a.m. during a previously scheduled appearance at a gas station in Lambertville.

It will be streamed live on the governor’s YouTube.com channel.

Even if the 1973 decision is reversed, abortion would remain legal in New Jersey. Murphy signed the Freedom of Reproductive Choice Act in January — a law that preserves a woman’s right of choice.

A first-draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito obtained by Politico states the U.S. Supreme Court has voted to strike the nearly half-century old ruling.

While it’s not clear whether the draft represents the court’s final word on the matter, a decision to overrule Roe would lead to abortion bans in roughly half of U.S. states and have huge ramifications for elections.

“I want to assure every New Jerseyan that today’s news about the Supreme Court does not change access to abortion in our state,” Murphy said on Twitter on Monday night. “Access to reproductive health care remains available to anyone who needs it in New Jersey.”

New Jersey’s law (S49) also authorizes the state Department of Banking and Insurance to study whether the cost of an abortion is an impediment to low-income and uninsured women getting one.

U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-7th Dist., state Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn LaTourette and Lambertville Mayor Andrew Nowick will join Murphy at Gasco on South Franklin Street for the already planned flood protection announcement.
