Gov. Pete Ricketts proclaims May as ‘Beef Month’ in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Monday morning, Gov. Pete Ricketts proclaimed May as “Beef Month” in Nebraska during a ceremony at the state Capitol.

Ricketts encouraged Nebraskans to take part in the 2022 Good Life Great Steaks Beef Passport program, which promotes 40 restaurants across the state.

Nebraskans participating in the Beef Passport program can qualify for prize drawings at any of the participating restaurants.  All the restaurants serve Nebraska beef.

Diners will receive a stamp on their passport for each restaurant they visit.  Stamps can be collected now through Sept. 30.

Nebraska ranks first in the nation for commercial cattle slaughter and second for beef exports, Ricketts said.

In 2021, Nebraska exported a record $1.81 billion of beef, which surpassed the previous annual high in 2018 by 25%.

“Nebraska farmers and ranchers take great pride in producing high-quality beef to feed our state, nation, and world,” Ricketts’ proclamation declared.  “Beef is part of a nutritious, healthy diet, and when consumers eat beef, they support the industry and encourage growth in the Good Life.”

Ricketts has been an increasingly vocal promoter of beef in recent years.

He declared “Meat on the Menu Day” in 2021 in response to Colorado’s “MeatOut Day,” saying the promotion of a plant-based diet was a “direct attack on our way of life.”
