Taylor Sheridan's masterpiece had quite a rough season finale, but now actor Luke Grimes says his character and Kayce Dutton's will need to decide on something incredibly important. In Yellowstone Season 5, Sheridan apparently told Grimes "just enough" about Kayce's "two paths."

Kayce Dutton will see changes in Yellowstone Season 5

In the Season 4 finale, Kayce's vision quest included a woman informing him that he must select a path. Grimes hasn't seen any scripts for Yellowstone Season 5, but he knows things are about to change for his character.

Sheridan "knows how this thing ends for everyone," but Grimes won't find out until the final screenplay is read.

That's one of the reasons Sheridan only informed him "just enough" about Kayce's "two paths" so he could say his Season 4 final line: “I saw the end of us.”

“Taylor and I sat down and he told me just enough about what those two paths looked like and just enough about that statement,” Grimes explained.

“It wasn’t enough that I know what’s going to happen or where he goes from here, but it was enough that I could say that line and have an idea of what I was talking about.”

Kayce Dutton essential in bringing Yellowstone to a close

The struggle between the Dutton Ranch and the Broken Rock Reservation is one of the most significant in the Yellowstone saga. Because Kayce is liked by both sides, Grimes believes his role will be essential to a resolution, presumably in Yellowstone Season 5.

“I’m really interested to see how that plays out…I really can’t wait to see how instrumental [Kayce] is in bringing this thing to a close one day,” Grimes said.

Kayce's devotion to his father and protection of the Yellowstone Ranch has put him and his nuclear family in danger throughout the series. His son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), was abducted and forced to kill an intruder in order to protect his mother, Monica (Kelsey Asbille). In the Season 3 finale, Kayce was nearly killed during the slaughter.

Kayce will have to make a difficult decision and as Grimes points out, this has been the storyline for his character "from day one."

Yellowstone Season 5 will premiere this summer on the Paramount Network.
