The Brooklyn Nets are beginning their offseason preparations a lot earlier than they thought they would be. After defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Play-In Tournament, the Nets were swept in their first-round series by the Boston Celtics.

A lot of their shortcomings were on full display against Boston, as the Nets were outcoached at every turn. Without Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving having superb performances every night, Brooklyn wasn’t able to steal any games, some of which went right down to the final seconds.

The roster needs some rebalancing as well. In the frontcourt some depth is needed after Brooklyn waived James Johnson, LaMarcus Aldridge was removed from the rotation and Blake Griffin was glued to the bench until the final two games when he played just over 25 minutes combined.

Andre Drummond was deemed unusable by the end of the series by Steve Nash, as he started the game and didn’t get back on the court. Nicolas Claxton played solidly in his place, but his free throw shooting is a big reason they lost Game 4.

Finding some more shooting in the frontcourt will also be key for Brooklyn. That shooting coming along with some size would be ideal, as Steve Nash trotted out some undersized lineups just hoping to find a spark with some long-range shooting.

One player that could be of interest is Carmelo Anthony. He would be a great fit as a scoring jolt off the bench in the frontcourt for the Brooklyn Nets.

“Now, he’s kind of shown he can play a role as a 3-point shooter and they need to add more shooting because they’re worried about Joe Harris to start the season. If he leaves the Lakers, there will be interest on both sides with him and the Nets. He could win there.”

Anthony has re-invented himself in recent seasons, showing that he is willing to play any role that a team needs. That put to sleep the narrative that surrounded him that kept him out of the league for nearly a season.

After the disaster which was the Los Angeles Lakers 2021-22 season, it would not be surprising to see Anthony consider other options for the upcoming season. The allure of playing alongside one of his best friends in LeBron James is certainly strong, but unless the front office makes some major changes, it could be difficult to win there next season.

A full season of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving should put the Nets in a much better position next season. Those two alone should be enough for Brooklyn to contend, but they will need pieces that fit around them will to take it all the way. Carmelo Anthony is one of those pieces that would fit well around them to take the roster to the next level.
