Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters signs with Los Angeles Chargers as undrafted free agent

The Los Angeles Chargers sign former Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters as an undrafted free agent per @TomPelissero on Twitter.
Peters originally committed to Michigan, with games under his belt after three years in Ann Arbor. However, Peters entered the transfer portal, committing to Illinois before the 2019 season.
Peters started 11 games for the Illini that season, throwing for 1,884 yards and 18 touchdowns, as well as, running for 213 yards and three touchdowns.
Peters started five games in the 2020 season but missed three due to COVID-19 protocols. Peters was on the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list, but ultimately led the team to a 1-4 record while he was under center.
In his final year with Illinois, Peters split games with fellow quarterback Art Sitkowski after an up-and-down start. Peters came in during overtime after Sitkowski was injured, helping Illinois upset No. 7 Penn State in a nine overtime game. He ended the year with 1,170 yards passing and seven touchdowns.

With Justin Herbert solidified as the Chargers’ franchise quarterback, Peters will look to fight for the backup role throughout training camp.
