Kyle Shanahan: Trade offers for Deebo Samuel weren't 'remotely close' to fair for 49ers

Deebo Samuel didn't get traded in the first two days of the 2022 NFL Draft and, according to San Francisco 49ers brass, it was never really close to happening.

"You'll consider anything," 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday of trade offers for Samuel, via ESPN's Nick Wagoner. "You've got a responsibility to help your organization the most you can, but there's no player like Deebo. It's hard to see how that helps your organization. So, you try to look into all the aspects of it and what people are willing to do, and nothing was even remotely close that we thought it would be fair for the Niners."

Samuel, 26, was an All-Pro in 2021 after finishing the year with 1,405 receiving yards, 365 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. He even threw a touchdown pass during the 49ers' regular-season finale against the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Despite his prolific season, Samuel is upset with the franchise and unwilling to sign a long-term contract extension to stay in San Francisco. He's asked for a trade, but 49ers general manager John Lynch said he "can't envision" the team actually going through with a deal.

According to The Athletic, the New York Jets and Detroit Lions both made offers for Samuel.

Shanahan says the team's focus is on mending the relationship with Samuel "because we'd love to keep going how we've been."
