Local FBI special agent could face charges in domestic violence case
Michael Van Aelstyn had a domestic violence complaint filed against him in Woodford County
VERSAILLES, Ky. (WTVQ) – A local FBI special agent faces potential charges of assault-domestic violence and strangulation in connection to an incident last year in Woodford County, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Citing court records, the newspaper report says a complaint was filed July 9, 2021 against 44-year old Michael Van Aelstyn and an emergency protective order (EPO) was issued that same day.
He was later criminally charged and turned himself in at the jail in Woodford County on August 13, 2021, according to the report.
Van Aelstyn was ordered to surrender firearms on the same day the EPO was issued, but on September 23, 2021, the order was amended, allowing him to have a firearm on duty, according to the report.
He was granted conditional release on a $5,000 unsecured bond, according to the newspaper.
A spokesperson for the FBI confirmed to the newspaper the agency is aware of the incident and that it is under an “administrative inquiry.”
The report says the case was presented to a grand jury for consideration, but as of this writing, no indictment had been returned against Aelstyn.
A case management conference is scheduled for June 2, 2022 in the domestic violence dispute, according to court records cited by the newspaper.
