YORK, Pa. — Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf wants to crack down on ghost guns.
Ghost guns are homemade firearms that are usually assembled from parts without serial numbers. This lack of serial numbers makes the weapons untraceable.
Wolf announced Friday that following the Biden administration's new final rule on ghost guns, Pennsylvania is ready to implement the regulation at the state level.
The new rule would require gun kit makers to include a serial number on the firearms. Sellers must also follow the same standard as with other guns, including requiring a background check for the purchase.
"The numbers don't lie: ghost guns are being seized and recovered from crime scenes at an alarming rate. If you want to own a gun, you need to go through checks and balances that are necessary to ensure public safety," Wolf said.
York Police Commissioner Michael Muldrow said nearly 10 ghost guns have been taken off the streets of York in the last four months.
"This really is a war that we're fighting, right here, right now, and we're fighting it on all fronts in all of our communities,” Muldrow said.
The federal regulation will take effect in August.
