“I was humbled to receive this award. I feel honored to live and work in a community where many stakeholders come together to ensure the needs of children and families are being met,” said Stewart.

USD Head Start serves under the USD School of Education, and the program provides no-cost preschool and early childhood in-home education programming for families, including expecting mother and children ages 3-5. Families participating in Head Start receive comprehensive services, including education, family support, nutrition, health, dental and mental health. The USD program serves Clay, Lincoln, Turner and Union counties.

“I have spent my whole career with the Head Start program, and my favorite part of my work is seeing parents gain more confidence in their parenting skills and really enjoy their children,” Stewart said.

Stewart is also involved with the South Dakota Association for the Education of Young Children, and she currently serves as an advisory board member for the Boys and Girls Club, which is new to Vermillion.
