Ilya Borodin Sets National 400IM Record At Russian Championships

Ilya Borodin lowered his own national 400IM record to 4:09.86 at the Russian Championships in Kazan.

Borodin set the previous mark of 4:10.02 en-route to gold at last year’s European Championships in Budapest, a time that still stands as a world junior record.

The 19-year-old split 56.77/2:01.36/3:11.65 before a freestyle blast of 58.21 brought him home 0.16 inside the previous record.

Borodin did not compete for the ROC in Tokyo because of covid and he – as with his teammates – will be waiting for some time yet for a return to international waters because of the bans imposed on Russian and Belarussian athletes by FINA and LEN.

Maxim Stupin was second in 4:14.35 with Artem Vorobyov rounding out the podium in 4:18.30.

Oleg Kostin was an emphatic winner in the men’s 50 fly in 22.72, 0.55 ahead of Roman Shevlyakov (23.27) and Andrey Zhilkin (23.37).

Maria Kameneva also enjoyed a clear victory in the women’s 50 back, stopping the clock in 27.73 with Elizaveta Agapitova 0.62 adrift in 28.35. Darya Vaskina was third in 28.38.

In the semis, Vladislav Grinev led the way in the 100 free in 47.99 ahead of Kliment Kolesnikov (48.12).

Arina Surkova was at the helm of the 100 fly as the only woman inside 58 in 57.72 with Svetlana Chimrova next in 58.12.

Surkova returned to progress second in the 50 free in 24.83 behind Maria Kameneva (24.56).

Kirill Strelnikov qualified first in the men’s 50br in 27.24

Unless these records can be verified by a disinterested non-Russian observer, they’re meaningless.
