Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

March 2024

In 2022, Health formally pledged to create health and wellness coverage that reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of our audience by working with writers, experts, and content creators of all backgrounds and experiences.

Our goal is to inform and empower you with accurate, empathetic, and actionable health information so you can make the best choice for your health.

To hold ourselves accountable, for 2024, we are re-committing to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Pledge, and promise to take into account the nationwide push for equity and the entrenched health disparities across the US.

We intend to focus on three core areas within our pledge: people, content, and community partnerships.

People: We Are Committed To Building a Diverse Team

We believe that unbiased health information comes from having a diverse range of people to help educate, teach, and contribute to Health’s website and social channels.

In 2022, we pledged to recruit and elevate Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) voices for our in-house team as well as our contractors, freelancers, and medical experts. Currently, our full-time staff consists of 14 editors, 43% of whom are members of the BIPOC community.

In 2024, we will continue to build upon our diverse contributor team to ensure that at least 50% of our freelance writers and medical reviewers belong to a marginalized group.

We will also continue our pledge to educate ourselves and our staff on issues related to equity, diversity in the workplace, and unconscious bias.

Content: We Know Words and Images Matter

As a health resource for everyone, we know it’s our responsibility to ensure articles and videos include people of diverse values, beliefs, behaviors, culture, and language. We want you to feel seen and heard within our content.

In 2022, we pledged to ensure that the language, images, and content used in Health’s content is anti-racist and anti-oppressive. As part of this pledge, in 2023, we increased our coverage of BIPOC health experiences and did a deep dive into the racial disparities that exist in dementia diagnosis and treatment.

In 2024, we recommit to our 2022 pledge and will publish four packages around healthcare disparities affecting marginalized groups. This includes a package published earlier this year around the increased likelihood of cardiovascular disease in the Black community.

Partnerships: Real Change Comes When We Work Together

We pledge to develop partnerships with other brands, organizations, and leaders that promote inclusivity and advocacy within the health and medical space. In 2023, we featured the Omar Carter Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on raising awareness for sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes of color. We will continue to highlight organizations working to reduce health disparities and improve access to care for marginalized groups.

Health also works closely with Dotdash Meredith’s Anti-Bias Review Board, which was formed in 2020, to assess content for bias and to help resolve concerns and questions around the creation of inclusive, unbiased content. In 2023, we partnered with the ABRB to audit our weight management content to make sure it’s as inclusive as possible and attended quarterly training sessions led by the ABRB. In 2024, we will continue utilizing the ABRB’s guidance and quarterly best practice trainings.
