U.S. Senators Tommy Tuberville and Richard Shelby have introduced legislation to extend the authorization of the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area (MSNHA). The MSNHA was first established by Congress in 2009, and it is set to expire in 2024. This reauthorization bill would extend the programs and funding eligibility for the MSNHA another 15 years.

The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area includes Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, and Morgan counties. It is currently the only National Heritage Area (NHA) in the state, and partners with the University of North Alabama. NHAs work with the National Park Service, state, and local entities to protect and support conservation and public access. These private-public partnerships create a diverse, community-driven approach to increasing heritage conservation, economic development, recreation, and tourism.

“Northwest Alabama holds great cultural and historical significance for both our state and country,” stated Tuberville. “I am proud to introduce legislation that reauthorizes the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and ensures we preserve our history for generations to come.”

The MSNHA spans the six counties of north Alabama’s Tennessee River water basin and was developed to help preserve the history of this region by focusing on three main themes: music, Native American heritage, and the Tennessee River.

“The Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area promotes a wide variety of rich traditions in northwest Alabama,” said Senator Shelby. “From the Tennessee River to Fame Recording Studio, the landmarks and historic culture of these counties should be preserved. I am pleased to introduce this reauthorization bill with Senator Tuberville to help maintain this designation.”
