University of Akron signs head basketball coach John Groce through 2030

Akron Zips head men’s basketball coach John Groce argues a call on court in the second half of Men’s MAC Tournament semifinal round, March 11, 2022, at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Akron Zips head basketball coach John Groce is not going anywhere.

University of Akron athletics director Charles Guthrie announced Wednesday that the school and Groce reached an agreement on a contract extension that will keep Groce in the Rubber City until June 2030.

“John is unquestionably an exceptional basketball coach,” Guthrie said. “He embodies Akron’s ongoing commitment to the total development of our student-athletes. We are thankful to John and his family for all they’ve done over the past five seasons and we look forward to our program’s bright future under his leadership.”

Groce is 94-59 since taking over as Akron’s 22nd head coach in 2017. The Zips are 63-25 over the last three seasons, and claim the Mid-American Conference’s best winning percentage in that timeframe.

After winning the last eight games of the season, including a 20-point drubbing of rival Kent State in the MAC tournament championship, Groce, who had previous March Madness berths at Ohio and Illinois, led the Zips to their fifth NCAA tournament appearance in school history.
