Baseballers grab two more conference wins against Branson Pirates, Carthage Tigers

Republic baseball picked up two more conference wins, beating Branson and Carthage at home.
Against Branson, Cole Iles pitched a complete game to lead Republic to a 7-0 win. Iles struck out 10 batters and allowed just four hits.
Neither team scored until Republic got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning. Garrett Lester led off with a double and went to third on a sacrifice by Devon Hughes. Gunner Ellison tripled into the tap in left center, scoring Lester, and Ellison scored on an RBI single by Sandridge to make the score 2-0.
Republic put the game away in the sixth inning, when the first six batters got base hits off Branson reliever Andrew Bristow. Trace Harrington and Ace McWatters singled, then Drew Schroeder singled to score Harrington and make the score 3-0. Garrett Lester laid down a perfect bunt to reach on a single and load the bases, and Devon Hughes doubled into left field to drive in two more runs, making the score 5-0. Gunner Ellison hit another double into the left center field gap to score two more, putting Republic on top 7-0.
It was the second consecutive complete-game victory for Iles, who had gone the distance in a win at Neosho the previous week.
Against Branson, Republic managed just four base hits, but took advantage of six Carthage walks to win 5-3. Gavyn Beckner allowed just one unearned run in six innings of work to pick up the win.
Republic scored first on a bases-loaded walk to Drew Schroeder in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The Tigers added two more in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Devon Hughes and a Carthage error. In the fifth inning, Republic took advantage of another error to score a run, then scored another on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Lester. That made the score 5-0.
Against reliever Ace McWatters, Carthage got back into the game in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs and putting the tying runs in scoring position before McWatters finished the game.
Carthage had 11 base hits, but stranded a dozen base runners and made four errors. Republic scored its five runs on just four hits, but benefited from six Carthage walks to win its fourth consecutive game.
Republic finished its week with a non-conference game against Class 6 defending state champion Liberty at U.S. Ballpark in Ozark. Liberty’s Brock Toney pitched a complete game and held Republic to four hits in a 5-0 Liberty win
