The Moapa High School Cheer team celebrated its Annual Cheer Banquet for the 2021-2022 academic year on Wednesday, April 20. The banquet took place at Moapa Valley High School.

The cheerleaders and their families were all invited to attend. Food was served to the attending families and all the cheerleaders from the JV and Varsity teams received participation certificates, gifts, and patches for their MVHS jackets.
“The banquet is a way for family members to come together and celebrate the girls’ accomplishments,” said Cheer Coach Desi Stastny.

Stastny said that the cheer squad has been busy in the last year. The team cheered through the middle of the COVID 19 pandemic with a movable schedule. Home games, away games, and four, two-hour practices each week, require a huge commitment for the girls, Stastny said. And their work didn’t end with the athletic seasons, Stastny added. After the cheer season, the team does spirit events through the year to keep the valley involved in the Pirate Spirit.

Stastny said that next year she expects the cheer team to be larger than before. In addition, they are planning even more spectacular and technical stunts and performances during games.

The team is working on a positive culture and perspective change that will increase school spirit and community engagement with the teams, Stastny said. “I am very excited for the direction the team is going,” she said.

Stastny announced that the newly appointed Cheer Captain for the upcoming year will be Lauralai Sobrio. She added that she is excited to be working with Lauralai for this academic year.
“The banquet is a great event to celebrate the year’s work!” said Sobrio. “ I am excited to be the incoming Cheer Captain and I want to give each squad member the opportunity to participate and have fun.”

She has already implemented a plan to develop the squad’s skills, while celebrating each member’s individuality.
Stastny indicated she is excited to be working with Lauralai for this academic year.

Honored during the banquette were JV team members, Allie Kohntopp, Brielle Baker, Mikelle Millett, Montserrat Carranco, and Allie Bledsoe. On the Varsity team those honored were, Lauralai Sobrio, Cherity Hoe, Victoria Herring, Hannah Wasland, Gracie May, Ella Goodrich, Macie Frei, Megan Conk, and Missy Whipple.

If you see your MHS Cheer Leaders stop and thank them for all their hard work!
