Former Cranston Mayor Allan Fung officially launches campaign for Congress
EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WLNE) — A former Cranston mayor is officially launching his bid for Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District seat.
Allan Fung announced his entry into the congressional race back in February.
“We need leaders who are willing to work with people on both sides of the aisle to bring common sense solutions to our everyday problems. I did just that in Cranston, and I can’t wait to do that for you as your next Congressman,” Fung said in an email.
He made his formal announcement in East Greenwich at the Varnum Armory on Tuesday afternoon.
The Republican was elected mayor in 2008, where he served until he was term limited in 2021. He was the Republican nominee for governor in 2014 and 2018, but lost to now U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.
Members of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee opposed Fung’s congressional run, on Tuesday, with a spokesperson predicting another loss.
“It’s because he’s aligned himself with a Trump Republican Party and we fully expect in his run this fall that Rhode Island voters are going to reject him for a third time,” spokesperson James Singer said.
