MARSHALL COUNTY, Indiana (KNX) — A Dollar Tree manager in Bremen, Indiana was fired from their job after posting a controversial sign outside of the store last week, according to NBC affiliate WNDU.

The handwritten sign had been seen by a number of people entering the store, allowing them to take pictures of it and post them online.

The sign apologized for the store being closed, and then called out the teenage workers at the store.

"I apologize for us closing AGAIN," the sign said. "My two new cashiers quit because I said their boyfriends couldn't stand here for their entire shift."

"Don’t hire Gen Z’s. They don’t know what work actually means. NOW HIRING! *Baby Boomers ONLY, thanks!"

According to the Pew Research Center, someone born between 1997 and 2012 is considered in Generation Z, while a person born between 1946 and 1964 is considered part of the Baby Boomer generation.

A person told WNDU that the manager hung up the sign to the front of the store after the two employees quit their jobs.

Randy Guiler, Vice President and Investor Relations for Dollar Tree, Inc., told the news station that the sign was not approved by the company at all.

"We are aware that an unauthorized sign was posted at our store for a brief period of time. The handwritten message was absolutely not approved by or condoned by our Company," Guiler said in a statement.

Dollar Tree customer Lindsay Berger told WNDU that stereotyping the workers because of their age makes no sense, since a worker could be lazy at any age.

"You’re going to get people from every group who are lazy and work hard. I’m sure when baby boomers were young, they were probably also called lazy, and it just keeps going on from generation to generation," Berger said.
