The Chicago Blackhawks are going to have some tough decisions to make this summer. From who to re-sign this offseason, to what the long-term plan for the future – the Blackhawks have a lot of unknowns.

The team currently doesn’t have an official head coach with Derek King taking on the interim title earlier in the year. They are going to have to make a decision on that front under young general manager Kyle Davidson.

The team also needs to make a decision on their big stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. The pair are both a year away from expiring deals with their current contracts set to end at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Oh, and they are going to have to figure out who their goalie is, what price to re-sign their former third overall pick in Kirby Dach and most importantly decide on the future of Alex DeBrincat with the team.

Alex DeBrincat’s current contract is set to expire at the end of next season, and he shined a light on that today in a press conference.

There are a lot of things on the plate of Kyle Davidson as shown in all those different tangibles above, but getting DeBrincat locked in on a contract extension at a fair price for him and the team definitely could and should be a top priority this offseason.

Even teams that are rebuilding need leadership. DeBrincat can be that guy. He is a star player that definitely doesn’t come around that often and considering he is still rather young he could still be a big piece of a championship team four to five years down the line.

The Blackhawks are heading towards a rebuild, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you want to trade away a star player that could be the building block for future success. What Kyle Davidson and the Hawks do with DeBrincat this offseason or in the future could play a big part to their success down the line.

Let us know in the comments what you think the team should do. If you think the team would be wise to trade DeBrincat as soon as possible or re-sign him the first opportunity they get this offseason.
