FRISCO, Texas --The Dallas Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA) has named forward Tyler Seguin as the Stars nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for the 2021-22 season. The Masterton Trophy is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Seguin, 30, is playing in his first full season after undergoing multiple surgeries following the Stars' run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020. Seguin played on a torn labrum in his hip during the playoff run, an injury that required surgery in the offseason. What was supposed to be a five-month recovery turned into much more for Seguin, who also had to undergo a procedure on his knee afterwards.
The native of Brampton, Ontario is tied for fourth on the club with 46 points (23-23=46) in 78 regular-season games, while he shares fifth with 13 power play points (3-10=13) and sixth with three power play goals. He also shares fourth with two game-winning goals and is one of seven Stars players this season to tally an overtime goal. The forward's 56.1% from the faceoff circle leads the club and ranks 14th in the NHL.
Last month, Seguin skated in his 800th career NHL contest on March 12 against the New York Rangers. He has climbed the franchise leaderboard this season, moving into sixth place on the all-time points list (562), seventh place on the all-time goals list (248) and 10th place on the all-time assists list (314).
About the Masterton Trophy
The Masterton Trophy winner is selected from a poll of the 32 chapters of the PHWA at the end of the regular season and a grant from the PHWA is awarded annually to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund, based in Bloomington, Minn., in the name of the winner.
The PHWA first presented the Masterton Trophy in 1968 to honor the late Bill Masterton, a player with the Minnesota North Stars, who exhibited the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Masterton is the only NHL player to die from injuries sustained in a game. He passed away on Jan. 15, 1968.
