Five professional students from the University at Buffalo will inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields of study during a panel discussion Wednesday, April 27, at the Grand Island High School Viking Theatre.

The forum is sponsored by the Zonta Club of Grand Island.

Senior-level students within their chosen professions will come together on stage to share their personal decisions of why they selected their respective career choices, give advice to students wanting to follow into these high-tech fields of study, and answer questions.

Interest in STEM is growing, as are jobs in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Panelists are from the fields of dental medicine, pharmacy, epidemiology, nursing and medicine.

They are:

√ Onalee Sortino: A third-year student in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine

√ Sarah Quinones: A third-year student in the University at Buffalo School of Public Health

√ Marisa Masi: A third-year student in the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

√ Nicole Finn: A second-year student in the University at Buffalo School of Nursing

√ Nonye Odukwe: A fourth-year student in the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

The event is held in memory of Amelia Earhart, who was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart was a member of Zonta International, which awards fellowships in her name every year to women demonstrating excellence in the field of aerospace sciences.

“The event is meant to spark interest in our Grand Island Middle and High School students in STEM fields of study, encouraging and empowering all students to look into these amazing opportunities and select a profession based upon the desire and willingness to make a difference, not upon limitations,” said Dr. Stacey Watt, a member of the Zonta Club of Grand Island. “As Amelia Earhart herself once said ‘Everyone has oceans to fly. If they have a heart to do it. Is it reckless? Maybe. But what do dreams know of boundaries?’ We all should take a page from her book and set upon our own personal journey with a mindset of limitless opportunities and boundless energy.

“We look forward to seeing you all at the event and demonstrating to all of our youth we believe in them and their boundless potential.”
