BOSTON -- The Red Sox reinstated catcher Christian Vázquez from the COVID-19 related injured list and optioned Ronaldo Hernández to Triple-A Worcester, the team announced shortly before Wednesday’s game against Toronto.
Vázquez was placed on the COVID-19 list Tuesday after testing positive for the virus. Because he is fully vaccinated, his return was dependent on him clearing league protocols, including testing negative twice and not having a fever. His return indicates that those negative tests came quickly after he registered a positive.
Connor Wong is still starting at catcher Wednesday night against Toronto. Vázquez is active as the backup and will likely catch Thursday’s series finale.
Two Red Sox players -- catcher Kevin Plawecki and infielder Jonathan Araúz -- remain on the COVID-19 list. Before the game, manager Alex Cora said there was a good chance the players on the COVID list would be activated before or during this weekend’s series at Tampa Bay.
“At least, they feel good, which is very important,” Cora said.
Vázquez is hitting .208 (5-for-24) with one homer and three RBIs in seven games this season.
