If Brian Kelly doesn’t win a national championship at LSU, will his tenure in Baton Rouge be a failure?
That was the question asked of former Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron on Wednesday.
After all, the past three coaches at LSU have won national titles. Nick Saban (2003), Les Miles (2007) and Orgeron (2019) all hoisted trophies in the name of college football supremacy.
Orgeron, who joined 1010XL, certainly didn’t shy away from the question.
“I know that’s the expectation at LSU,” Orgeron said of a national title. “They want it now. You ought to be able to do that LSU. They gave me three years, which was very fair. They gave us the time to build a football team and look what happened. It’s a great state, Louisiana.
“It’s not like Florida with FSU, Florida and Miami fighting for the top players. It’s LSU. You should get the top players. They have a great tradition.
“You should win the national championship. You’re not going to win it every year, but you should, in three years, be able to do it.”
Orgeron was 51-20 in six years in Baton Rouge, including a 15-0 record in the national title season.
