The Columbus Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring an Earth Day event this Friday, April 22nd from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. in Downtown Columbus. The public can view solar and recycle/reuse demonstrations and participate in an E-Bike convention. In Grant County, the anti-litter program Pick It Up – Toss No Mas has partnered with other groups in Grant County for a community-wide trash cleanup this Saturday, April 23rd. Volunteers can join the effort at 3 locations that include:  Gough Park in Silver City from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. ; Viola Stone Park in Santa Clara from 10:00 A.M.  1:00 P.M.; and Terrazas Funeral Home on Highway 180 from 9:00 A.M.  to 12 noon. In addition, Keep Luna County Beautiful is inviting the community to participate in the annual Great American Clean up from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 23. Food and drinks will be provided to the participants after the cleanup. For the past 50 years, Earth Day has been celebrated by billions of people around the globe, annually every April 22, to join together in promoting awareness for the health of the environment.

Southwest New Mexico ACT in partnership with the United Way and Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments is bringing the CO-STARTERS program for entrepreneurs to Grant County for an eighth time. CO-STARTERS is a ten-week, cohort-based program that equips entrepreneurs of all kinds with the insights, relationships, and tools needed to turn business ideas into action. Western New Mexico University received a $142,000 grant from the U.S Department of Agriculture and the National Institute of Food and Technology for the purpose of establishing a research program in nano-enabled agriculture. Being a new concept, a group of students are currently harvesting and processing the tomato vines in preparation for analysis with recently acquired spectroscopy instrumentation.
