$3 Billion dollars that’s the amount state legislators tell us have been used to house undocumented immigrants in the Briscoe and Segovia State Prisons. Investigative Reporter Yami Virgin tells us that a letter has been sent to the Attorney General’s Office to investigate what they are calling unconstitutional detainment of migrants.
Four democrats showed up today for the tour of the Briscoe facility in Dilley, it is one of two that is being used by Operation Lone Star to house and detain over 950 undocumented immigrants who were arrested on charges of criminal trespassing.
“So if Greg Abbott wants to be the policeman* of immigration if he wants to be the immigration czar of Texas, which he has no jurisdictional ability to do so. He has no ability, no resources to buy which to do,” says Roland Gutierrez, Texas State Senator.
They come from Sierra Leone, Venezuela, and Peru to name a few countries.
“If he wants to do that, then what he should do is grab the folks that DPS detained and send them down to the nearest border checkpoint or border facility for processing where we know 90% of the people are getting deported or voluntary returned,” says Gutierrez.
Gutierrez said 3 billion dollars have been used so far to house these undocumented immigrants. State Representative Liz Campos of San Antonio said the billions being used here to do the federal government’s job should be used for the children of Texas.
“And I want to make a plea to the governor -- a plea, rather than spending so much money on this border issue that he does not need to be involved with -- to save our Texas kids,” says Liz Campos, State Representative San Antonio. “CPS needs to be reformed. We need funds to go to Child Protective Services. So our children can live a good life.”
Senator Barbara Hawkins of San Antonio said one man’s story touched her heart after hearing his family had no idea what happened to him since authorities took his cell phone after he was detained.
“It is inhumane. individuals need to be able to make contact with their families, their loved ones, the attorneys, and at least know why they're here,” says Barbara Hawkins, State Senator San Antonio.
Gutierrez said that the 951 migrants being held are not getting due process, that includes many who are able to file for asylum and in reality are not undocumented.
“There is no due process afforded to these people that come here seeking political asylum. Not once are they asked whether they have a credible fear of the country in which they left, you have many people from Central America, you have a few people from West Africa, not one of them has been asked as they would be by an immigration officer, if they have an asylum claim, or if they have context to the United States by virtue of relatives,” says Gutierrez.
Gutierrez did tell you that there are some individuals being held here under smuggling charges. Charges he claims are not right.
