Boston Red Sox's Christian Vazquez, Jonathan Arauz join Kevin Plawecki on COVID-19 injured list

BOSTON -- The Red Sox placed catcher Christian Vazquez and infielder Jonathan Arauz on the COVID-19 injured list Tuesday, joining catcher Kevin Plawecki, who was placed on the COVID IL on Monday.

On Monday, Plawecki and two unnamed staff members tested positive for COVID-19, leading the Red Sox to call up Connor Wong from Triple-A Worcester on an emergency basis.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Vazquez and Arauz are vaccinated, allowing them to return to games quicker after they test negative.

"This is the world we live in. It's a lot different than '20 and last year," Cora said. "I've been in a hotel for several days because one of my kids tested positive. We made some adjustments, like on the road, we'll go from three buses to five buses. We want to protect our families, our organization and the group."

After Vazquez landed on the IL, Wong was the only catcher on the Red Sox roster before they recalled Ronaldo Hernandez from Worcester. In the corresponding move, the Red Sox placed left-hander Rich Hill on the bereavement/family medical emergency list. Hill, who threw 4 2/3 innings in Monday's loss to the Minnesota Twins, will be on the list for at least three days and no more than seven.

To replace Arauz and Vazquez on the roster, the Red Sox called up reliever Tyler Danish and infielder Rob Refsnyder.

Vazquez has hit .208 through his first seven games of the season. He hit his first home run of 2022 against the Twins on Monday.
